SUCCESS TO HONOR
FAMILY
|
| At 14, Myo Myint
immigrated from Burma in search of the American Dream. His parents,
accountants by training, sold everything to immigrate, taking jobs as a
cook and a housekeeper in a hotel. Myo spent his first two years in the
United States enduring five moves; sleeping on the floor of a
one-bedroom apartment.
Beginning in high school and all through college, Myo
worked to help support his family. Any money not spent on his education
went to provide for his family. Still, Myo excelled, graduating from
college second in his class, with a 3.9 GPA in Biomedical Engineering.

Myo has a long
history of supporting the LGBT community. In high school, as a peer
counselor, Myo often counseled students struggling with their sexual
orientation. As an undergraduate, he served on many student
organizations, using his position to help pave the way for recognition
and equality for LGBT students and organizations on his Richmond
campus.
In medical school, Myo
continues to make a difference. He founded the LGBT Students and
Straight Allies at the Medical College of Virginia. A vital resource
for LGBT medical students, the group is actively shaping a more
LGBT-inclusive curriculum. Now in its second, the group has ballooned
to over seventy members. He has also worked on a national level to
educate the medical community on the delivery of LGBT-sensitive health
care.

“One day, I will find out about my great aunt…and
celebrate her life. Until then, with my education, I pledge to serve
the LGBT community in her loving memory.”
