SHAPING EDUCATION
|
Rare is the student that hits the ground running with
an immediate stride. Fortunately for LGBT health, Andrea Knittel
is just such a student.
Upon entering medical school, Andrea quickly became
involved in LGBT health. During her first year, Andrea served as
an associate coordinator with the American Medical Student Association
(AMSA), creating a pilot study to evaluate LGBT curricula in medical
schools across the country. Subsequently, Andrea expanded her
role, becoming the Chair of the AMSA LGBT Health Action Committee. |

NATIONAL IMPACT
|
|
After quickly rising to leadership positions within
AMSA, Andrea did not stop making an impact. She organized a
two-day LGBT Leadership Summit to give medical students the practical
skills necessary to organize and educate their peers.
In 2007, Andrea
further strengthened her role as a leader in LGBT health through the
successful execution of the AMSA 2007 Allies Campaign, bringing the
strengths of AMSA advocates of all genders, orientations and identities
into the fight for LGBT equality.
Andrea's future as a
leader in LGBT health is extremely promising. Pursuing a Ph.D. in
Health Behavior and Health Education, she constantly demonstrates a
clear and impressive grasp of the intersections of social disadvantage,
stigma and health, understanding how these issues impact
well-being. Her ability to open doors and establish trust will
serve our community well.

“As a clinician I will remain dedicated to
compassionate and competent care for all people. I have a passion
for preventative medicine and longitudinal care of patients; two
elements I consider critical for adequately addressing the health
concerns facing the LGBT community.”
