PROMOTING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
Kat R. Carrick
Ph.D. Candidate – University of Pittsburgh
2006 HEART Scholar

“I believe that improving our understanding and acceptance of diversity is a key component in preparing future health care professionals to meet the challenging demands of our health care system.”

- Kat R. Carrick, 2006 HEART Scholar

AUTHOR, EDUCATOR

Presently completing her Ph.D. in Social Work, Kat’s doctoral dissertation is studying how students of the health professions compare in their attitudes on aging and how LGBT sexuality influences their understanding of human rights issues. Concurrently, Kat co-authored a chapter in The Handbook of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Public Health; taught, presented and published on intimate partner abuse and LGBT elder care; and critical incident stress debriefing for families and victims of the September 11th attacks.

UNDAUNTED ACTIVIST

As a community advocate, Kat works tirelessly to promote the well-being of the LGBT community. Without regard for her own position as a graduate student, she filed a formal complaint challenging the University of Pittsburgh’s partner policy. Kat’s testimony before the university’s Anti-discrimination Committee led to policy changes creating a more equitable environment for same-sex couples.

Despite Kat’s heavy academic burden she is a leader in Pittsburgh’s LGBT community. A Board member of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, Kat promotes the center and created a monthly lesbian pot-luck dinner, creating a social alternative to the bar scene.

Looking toward her future in LGBT health, Kat plans to continue building on a career that’s the envy of many people nearing retirement. Central to her goals is her dedication to ensuring the health and well-being of the LGBT community.

“What better way to support the LGBT community than if we could assume that all health care providers were trained and sensitive to their needs.”
