José Pares-Avila
Doctoral Candidate, Nursing Practice – University of Washington
2007 HEART Scholar

“[There is] a very strong evidence-based case that LGBT populations are one of six population groups in the U.S. at risk for health disparities… Adding sexual orientation and gender identity in a heterosexist healthcare system paints a pretty horrific picture of what LGBT patients face every time they seek healthcare.”

- José Pares-Avila, 2007 HEART Scholar

GROWTH VIA EDUCATION

After 18 years of practicing as a clinical psychologist with organizations as critical to LGBT health as Fenway Community Health in Boston, José took a bold step – he answered the call the returned to school to seek his nursing degree.

Once back in school, José continued to contribute to LGBT health. His Master’s scholarly project focused on LGBT health and nursing education. The completed manuscript provides critical direction on LGBT health issues in general, and how nursing education should respond to meet those needs.

LEADERSHIP DURING CRISIS

During José’s Master’s level education, a tragedy struck his campus when a university employee while at work, was murdered by her former partner. The university community was grief-stricken and traumatized. José answered the call, offering guidance by drawing on his considerable experience as a psychologist specializing in domestic violence. José was a pillar of support to the entire university during a horrific tragedy.

On a more global scale, José has made his mark on LGBT health in more ways than can be imagined. Working in both the English and Spanish-speaking communities, José has tackled such divergent and complex social problems as substance abuse, domestic partner violence, and sexual violence with HIV+ youth.

LGBT HEART is honored to recognize José’s
commitment to the LGBT and Latino communities.!

“My major goal as an openly gay Nurse Practitioner is to advocate for inclusiveness of LGBT health in the training of nurses and to raise awareness about disparities in the LGBT communities.”
