BRIDGING RESEARCH, POLICY, AND PRACTICE
Louis Graham
DrPH - University of North Carolina, Greensboro
2008 HEART Scholar

“I see myself serving as a bridge between policy, research, and practice assuring that research is not conducted in a vacuum; that policies are evidence based; and that practitioners have a meaningful position of power to influence policy and research agendas.”

- Louis Graham, 2008 HEART Scholar

REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH
To review Louis' background is to wander through a unique hybrid of experiences that range from community educator and organizer to CDC researcher.

Dedicated to addressing research and health policy as it applies to underserved populations, Louis is a model for how public health students can serve and transform the communities in which they work.  The way he approaches public health and the LGBT community sets a standard for other practitioners and scholars.

Presently completing his Doctorate in Public Health, Louis is working to transform research and policy practices to effectively address the interrelationship between sexual health, mental health, and general health -- all of which are vital to the overall health of the individual as well as the well-being of the LGBT community.

LOCAL FOCUS, GLOBAL IMPACT

Throughout his academic career, Louis has endeavored to actively engage local CBO's, school-related organizations, and government entities to address the immediate health needs of minority and under-served populations.  From evaluating the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness strategies in Zwide Township, South Africa, to addressing adolescent and teen mental illness in Atlanta, GA, Louis has kept a keen eye on local solutions which can be replicated for a greater global implementation.

Louis takes every opportunity to become engaged in projects and activities that advance the health of the LGBT community, with a knack for establishing coalitions of people and agencies committed to working with the community.

“I am passionate, committed, and dedicated
to engaging in groundbreaking and progressive
research that seeks to address health disparities in underserved communities and I am willing to do
my part in helping the country move toward
improved health and well-being for all.”
