BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES
  Julie Anne Baker
M.D. / Ph.D. Candidate – University at Buffalo
2005 HEART Scholar

“As a woman, a Jew and a lesbian, I appreciate the difficulties that can come with being different. As such, I actively advocate for other individuals who may be marginalized.”

- Julie Anne Baker, 2005 HEART Scholar

ROLE MODEL

Julie Anne Baker has served as an activist and educator to the masses, one person at a time. As President of her medical school’s LGBT group, she has organized lectures, disseminated educational materials and partnered with her school’s faculty to develop a curriculum that is LGBT-inclusive. Through her conversations with classmates, coworkers and neighbors, Julie has helped create greater understanding of the need for everyone to work toward equal rights for all.

SCIENCE & ADVOCACY

Raising healthy families is reflected in Julie’s academic interest in all aspects of human reproduction. She has dedicated her training and her career to helping members of the LGBT community enter the world of parenthood. She has been selected to participate in prestigious internships in reproductive epidemiology while also focusing heavily on women’s health issues, such as ovarian and breast cancer, as demonstrated by her research and publication activities.

Not only have Julie’s research and interests already impacted the health of the LGBT community, they have impacted her mentors and colleagues as well. The leadership of her academic programs consider Julie the kind of scientist and future clinician that comes along “once every twenty years.” With future leaders like Julie in the pipeline, the future of LGBT health is in good hands.

“My interest in becoming a reproductive endocrinologist
(fertility specialist) is largely a result of my desire to help
LGBT individuals become parents. After completing my
MD-PhD training, I will be uniquely positioned to be a
teacher, scientist and clinician.”
